Olive Museum

A Unique Olive-Growing Museum in Dalmatia

Welcome to the Stella Croatica Olive Museum, a one-of-a-kind destination in Dalmatia where nature, science, and tradition come together in a fascinating story about the plant that has shaped the entire Mediterranean culture.

Through interactive displays, multimedia presentations, and original objects, you'll discover everything – from the history of olive cultivation and the process of turning olives into oil to the role of olive oil in health and nutrition.

Temperament, Bura Wind, Fjaka, and the Olive

Some of the best-known symbols of Dalmatia are: the temperament of its people, the bura wind, fjaka, and the olive. It’s rare to find a household in Dalmatia that doesn’t consume olive oil or have an olive tree in the yard. Olive oil sustains the vitality and health of the local people – a fact known since Roman times, when the olive was already deeply valued.

Whether you're a history enthusiast, a food lover, or simply looking for an inspiring day trip from Split, the museum offers a unique and educational experience you won’t forget.

What can you see in the museum?

Our olive-growing museum is divided into four thematic sections:

  1. History of olives in Dalmatia – from the earliest traces to modern-day olive farming
  2. Olive botany and lifecycle – growth, development, varieties, and climate zones from Istria to Dubrovnik
  3. Harvest and processing – the journey of the olive from tree to bottle
  4. Oil quality and health – how to recognize extra virgin olive oil and its health benefits

Multimedia content and harvest experience

At the heart of the museum is a video room featuring documentary footage of the olive harvest and oil processing, taking place each fall between October and November. This gives visitors an immersive look into the olive-growing season in Dalmatia.

Mediterranean diet and visitor gifts

The museum also promotes the Mediterranean diet as the foundation of a healthy lifestyle. Each visitor receives a set of traditional recipes where olive oil is the main ingredient, highlighting its central role in Dalmatian cuisine. Alongside the museum, we also offer a special Olive oil tasting workshop, where you can learn how to recognize high-quality olive oils – or simply enjoy a walk through our small olive grove.

This attraction makes the Stella Croatica Olive Museum a must-visit destination for anyone interested in nature, food, and culture on a day trip from Split.

Olive Oil Roads

The olive hasn’t only shaped the landscape, but also the everyday life of Mediterranean peoples. As a mythical and sacred tree, it is deeply connected to rituals and traditions, shaping a way of life and giving rise to a thousand-year-old civilization – the “civilization of the olive.”

The Olive Roads follow the path of this civilization, from Greece to the Black Sea, across the entire Mediterranean basin.

From history to the present day, olives are at the heart of our lives
